Laptop Logon Problems

New Improved Laptops

Administrator lock (Pam got rid of administrator lock 9/09)

Sometimes happens when battery runs out of juice. Use laptop username & password listed on "passwords" page in the Reference Manual at the Ref Desk.

Frozen laptop

Sometimes happens when an application refuses to respond. Take the battery out (bottom of laptop, move two switches to side to remove/loosen) & put back, then turn computer back on. Works just like turning a desktop computer off & on.

Checking laptop battery charge

Hold cursor over battery icon at bottom right of screen - you should see percent & time remaining. On the Dells, you need to click on the left-pointing arrows to show hidden icons (I'll ask Pam to unhide the icons).

The old info, likely no longer relevant, but left here for now:

Some of the most common laptop logon error messages:

Error: "Domain STUDENT is not available"
Is the wireless toggle switch (Dells: left side; Gateways: toggle ((.)) key) on? If not, try to toggle the wireless capability back on. Next, try plugging in power cord (it works sometimes, oddly). Lastly (mostly on Gateways only), try rebooting. If still not functional, have the student return the laptop & get a new one, & let Circ know the laptop may have a problem.
Error: "Your account is configured to prevent you from using this computer..."
The student has not created a CABT 510 account. They need to go to the Account Lookup station & create an account.
Error: "The system could not log you on..."
Typically caused by an incorrect username or incorrect password. If they aren't sure, have them go to the Account Lookup station to change or confirm their password. Are they using the right account? (Remember, the wireless network uses the same account info as WebCT, but WebAdvisor accounts are completely separate.)
Pop-up Location Information box, asking for country, area code, etc.
Laptop login screen has a check mark next to "use dialup;" remove check mark.

Hi, everyone.
Students can also experience difficulties if they're trying to log on from the back of the library. This occurs with our laptops as well as their own. Sometimes, it's as simple as having them come forward to the Ref desk to log in.
